It is officially summer 2026, for many of us our favourite time of year. Summer often includes travel, getting out more and generally a busy schedule. It can be really easy to put your health on the backburner, but staying on top of things is so important no matter the time of year. Here are a few tips…
Stay safe in the sun
Protect your skin by applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and seeking shade during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm). Remember to reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
Keep hydrated
Warmer weather means your body loses more fluid. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty, and try to limit alcohol and sugary drinks if you’re spending long periods in the sun.
Stay active
Take advantage of the longer days by getting outside for a walk, bike ride, or other gentle exercise. If you’re heading outdoors, don’t forget the essentials like insect repellent, sunscreen, and any regular medications you may need. Staying active while being prepared helps you make the most of the summer safely.
Don’t forget your sleep
Longer evenings and warmer nights can make it harder to get a good night’s rest. Keep your bedroom cool, avoid screens before bed, and stick to a regular sleep routine where possible.
Recognise the signs of dehydration
Feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy or getting headaches can all be signs that you need more fluids. Drink water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.

Prepare your medication before your summer holiday
If you take regular medication, a little planning goes a long way toward preventing any holiday stress. Make sure you have enough to cover your whole trip, plus a few extra days in case of delays. It’s best to keep medicines in your hand luggage so they’re protected from extreme temperatures and always within reach. If you use inhalers, EpiPens or other essential items, check the expiry dates before you go and ensure everything is clearly labelled.
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I drink during the summer? Most adults should aim for around 6–8 glasses of fluid a day, but you may need more if you’re exercising, spending time in the sun, or it’s particularly hot.
What SPF sunscreen should I use? Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and a 4-star or 5-star UVA rating. Apply it 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
Can I leave my medication in a hot car? No. Many medicines should be stored below 25°C, and some need to be kept in the fridge. Always check the storage instructions and avoid leaving medication in direct sunlight or a hot vehicle.
