New Year, New Habits: How to Set & Stick to Realistic Goals

As the new year rolls in, many of us begin to think about new goals we can implicate into our lives. However, when day to day life comes into play it can be difficult to stick to these new goals. Here at Coda Pharmacy, we have deconstructed why it can be hard to stick to goals and how to make them realistic and achievable.

Often when setting goals it can be easy to aim too high and to an unreachable standard. This can also feel really overwhelming and increase the chances of not wanting to stick to the goal. We don't always stick to our goals due to lack of accountability and procrastination, it can be hard to motivate ourselves when no one else is telling us to do it and we can just keep putting it off. Life can get busy and with that comes distractions which can take your mind away from your goals, focusing on more important things.

Fear of failure and negative thinking can often prevent people from achieving their goal. The fear of making mistakes, being judged or experiencing disappointment often holds people back from trying. Similarly, negative thoughts can lead to irrational decision-making, causing individuals to doubt their abilities and avoid taking necessary risks. These mental roadblocks can make it difficult to move forward and may prevent people from reaching their full potential.

So, what can you do to change this?

Break down big goals into smaller tasks

While it's great to have big aspirations, it's more effective to start with small, manageable goals that you can achieve. This way, you can focus on one thing at a time and celebrate small victories along the way, keeping you motivated.

Make your goals accessible

Make sure to set your goals to be accessible by setting them into tasks. For example, instead of ‘do more exercise’, go with ‘complete 20 minutes of running a day’. This way you have a concrete goal to stick to, making it much easier.

Create a routine

Incorporate your goals into your daily routine. Whether it’s exercising in the morning, setting aside time to read every evening, or budgeting every week, routines help create habits. When your goals become part of your regular schedule, they feel less like a chore and more like a natural part of your day.

Take Accountability

Having someone to share your goals with can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or a support group, accountability keeps you motivated and gives you an extra push when you're feeling unmotivated. You’re more likely to stick to your goals if you have someone cheering you on or checking in regularly to see how you’re doing.

Track your progress

Tracking your progress will increase your chances of success. This will allow you to see what is working best for you and to hold yourself accountable. The more you monitor your progress the more likely you are to achieve your goals.

Be flexible

Every month will be different and you won't always be able to achieve every goal. So, if you haven't got to the saving goal you wanted or missed out a few workouts, that's okay! Life gets in the way and nothing is ever going to be perfect, don't be hard on yourself. Setting goals should be a fun and exciting challenge, not something that consumes your everyday life.

If you're setting goals this new year, make sure to stick to these simple steps and see how you go. Remember to have fun and not take it too seriously. Good luck!
